Description of key information
To determine the toxicity of p-nonylphenol-formaldehyde-diethanolamine, Mannich base to fish, a GLP-compliant fish toxicity test was performed in accordance with OECD guideline 203 (Toxi-Coop Zrt, 2013). In this study, fish (7 per concentration) were exposed to nominal test substance concentrations of 6.9, 10.4, 15.6, 23.3 and 35.0 mg/L and a blank control for 96 hours under static conditions. Analytical verification of nominal test concentrations was performed. As analytically measured test item concentrations deviated more than ± 20 % of the nominal over the test period of 96 hours, the exposure concentrations were calculated as the geometric mean of the concentrations measured at start and at the end of the experiment. Analytical concentrations were 4.3, 6.1, 10.1, 15.8 and 24.1 mg/L. After 96 hours exposure, no mortality observed in the control group and in the concentrations of 4.3 and 6.1 mg/L during the whole test period. In the concentration of 10.1 mg/L six fish and in the concentrations of 15.8 and 24.1 mg/L all seven treated fish died during the exposure period. With regard to sub-lethal effects, no signs abnormalities were observed in the control and in the concentrations of 4.3 and 6.1 mg/L. In the concentration of 10.1 mg/L swimming problems (i.e. off-balance, whirling) were noticed. In the concentrations of 15.8 and 24.1 mg/L strong swimming problems (i.e. off-balance, whirling), lying at the bottom of the aquarium or floating in the water were observed. Based on these findings, the 96-h LC50 is determined at 8.8 mg/L.
