Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Biodegradation: The submission substance is readily biodegradable (66% biodegradation within 10 days).

Bioaccumulation: The submission substance has a very low potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow << 3).

Adsorption / desorption: The submission substance is unlikely to adsorb to soil and sediment (Kd in the range of 0.73 to 1.69 L/kg measured in three soils, equivalent to a Koc-range of 33.8 - 65.6 L/kg).

Additional information

n-Butylamine has no intrinsic persistent or bioaccumulating properties:

It is readily biodegradable: BOD/ThOD = 85% and 66% without and including nitrification, respectively, within 14 days. The 10 day-window requirement was met (62% biodegradation incl. nitrification within 10 days) [NITE 1979 / 2005].

Based on model calculations, its half-life time is supposed to be about 4 - 12 h in air due to OH radical induced photolysis. However, based on the high water solubility and the high ionisation potential (pKa 10.8), volatility from water and moist soil will be very low and this pathway will be of low relevance.

No bioaccumulating potential is expected in aquatic organisms, given the low logPow of <1 and the short residence time in the environment.

The adsorption to soil and sediment particles was determined to be low, as would be expected from the high water solubility: measured Kd values were in the range of 0.73 to 1.69 L/kg determined from two soils and one sediment, equivalent to a Koc-range of 33.8 - 65.6 L/kg [van Oepen et al. 1991].
