Additional information

Ultrastructural changes in liver tissue of mice fed nitrosamine precursors, 1000 ppm of the test substance and 2000 ppm nitrite, were observed. 6 months of chronic treatment with the combination resulted in swelling of mitochondria and distension of smooth ER, and after 12 months, an increased incidence of nodules, necrotic foci and hepatoma was found. Degenerative or neoplastic liver changes were not found in controls or in animals of treatment groups receiving a diet supplemented with soybean or ascorbic acid. The effect of the test substance, in the absence of exogenous nitrite, was not investigated.
