The rate of oxidation for propionaldehyde is comparable to acetaldehyde when tested in vitro at substrate concentrations between 0.5 and 3.0 mM using partially purified human liver aldehyde dehydrogenase

Relative rates of oxidation of aldehydes by human liver aldehyde dehydrogenase:

   Aldehyde concentration
 substrate 0.05 mM   0.03 mM  3.0 mM
 Acetaldehyde  0.82  0.92  1.0*
 Propionaldehyde 0.90   1.0  1.1

(*: Rate with 3.0 mM acetaldehyde set equal to 1.0 as standard)
