- Endpoint:
- explosive properties of explosives
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- from 10 October 2008 to 21 November 2008
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- reference to same study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- Thermal sensitivity was tested with a minor modification to the tube packing procedure. This modification did not have any effect on the conclusion.
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Key result
- Parameter:
- thermal sensitivity - Koenen test: diameter of the orifice plate
- Remarks:
- performed with a 6 mm orifice plate and a 2 mm orifice plate
- Remarks on result:
- not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement
- Key result
- Parameter:
- sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
- Remarks on result:
- not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
- Key result
- Parameter:
- sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
- Remarks on result:
- not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- Based under the conditions of the test, cerium ammonium nitrate was observed not to have explosive properties after a shock test, friction test and thermal sensitivity test.
Reference
Cerium ammonium nitrate has been determined not to have shock sensitivity to explosion under the conditions of the test; no ignition or explosion was observed.
Cerium ammonium nitrate has been determined not to have friction sensitivity to explosion under the conditions of the test; no ignition or explosion was observed.
Cerium ammonium nitrate has been determined not to have thermal sensitivity to explosion under the conditions of the test. The test item burned first with a little orange flame, then with a light flame.
Description of key information
Cerium ammonium nitrate was concluded not to have explosive properties following a GLP study according to test method EC A.14 (Vibert, 2008).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
Additional information
The experimental data show that cerium ammonium nitrate is not sensitive to friction, shock or heat.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on a GLP study in accordance with EC A.14, cerium ammonium nitrate was concluded not to have explosive properties (Vibert, 2008).
