The reported 96hr LC50 for Carassius auratus (Goldfish) was experimentally determined to be 12.52 mg/L. The result does not indicate that mesitylene (1 ,3 ,5-trimethylbenzene) would meet the criteria for toxic in the PBT assessment. This endpoint will not effect the classification of the substance since a lower LC50 is found for Daphnia magna which will determine the classification.

The Brinniman et al (1976) study predates implementation of GLP and development of study guidelines, however the procedure and means of analysis suggest that the methodology was appropriate to evaluate the short term toxicity to fish. There is otherwise no information in the article to suggest that the data are invalid. The experimentally determined 96 hour LC50 for goldfish was reported to be 12.52 mg/L.

A supporting QSAR calculation using the ECOSAR model gives an estimated 96 hour LC50 for fish of 5.2 mg/L. The CITI (1981) study was given a reliability of 4 because the primary source was unavailable for review. When exposed to 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, the 48 hour LC50 for Oeyzias latipes (Rice Fish)) was experimentally determined to be 8.6 mg/L.
