Description of key information
An EC50 of 74.4 mg/l is reported in an acute toxicity study on aquatic invertebrates - Daphnia magna. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) over 48 hours was observed at 50 mg/l.

A key study is presented for the acute toxicity of 2-chloropropionic acid to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna). This study was performed according to OECD guideline 202, Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test, Annex V EEC C2 Acute Toxicity for Daphnia and ToxCalc version 5.0 "Comprehensive Toxicity Data Analysis and Database Software". The study was conducted to GLP. This study determined the 24 hour EC50 to be 75 mg/l, the 48 hour EC50 to be 74.4 mg/l and the 48 hour NOEC to be 50 mg/l. 100% immobilisation of the Daphnia over 48 hours was observed at 100 mg/l.
The IUCLID 4 dataset reports an acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates study on Daphnia magna according to an AFNOR (Association Francais de Normalisation) standard (number T90301). No information on GLP is presented.After 24 hours exposure the EC50 is reported to be 191 mg/l.
This outcome and that of the key study together with the ready biodegradation would not lead to any environmental classification for 2-chloropropionic acid. However the result of the toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria should also be considered when deciding on a classification for environmental effects (see Section 6.1.5).
