Description of key information

The substance is highly unsoluble in water and therefore no effects within the limit of water solubility are expected. This has been confirmed in the available acute aquatic toxicity study in Daphnia magna. And it is further supported by three available acute fish studies where the analogue substances was found to be not toxic under test conditions in the range of water solubility.

Additional information

Three studies were conducted with the analogue test substance 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters in different fish species.

In the first study the acute toxicity of 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters to Zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) was determined in a 96 -hour static test according to the Commision Directive 92/96/EEC, Annex Part C.1, dated December 29, 1992 and the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 203, adopted July 17, 1992. The test was performed in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations. Due to the low water solubility limit of the test substance a filtrate of a 1 g/L in tap water (stirring for 18 hours) was tested. Analytical verification was done by means of DOC determination. The measured values of the test solutions after 24 hours deviated more than 20% from the values of the freshly prepared solutions. Therefore the geometric mean (3.0 mg/L) of the these solutions were used for evaluation. Additionally a control was tested in parallel. No lethality of Brachydanio rerio was observed at the tested concentration after 96 hours exposure.

In a second study the LC50 of 1,2,4 -Benzenetricarboxylic acid, mixed decyl and octyl triesters was greater than 1 mg/L, tested with Salmo gaidneri.

In a third supporting study the acute toxicity of the test item to the freshwater fish rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) has been investigated and gave a 96-Hour LL50 value of greater than 100 mg/L loading rate WAF. The No Observed Effect Loading rate was 100 mg/L loading rate WAF.

Therefore the analogu substance was not toxic under test conditions in the range of water solubility towards fish.
