Version / remarks:
2nd edition 1988 (with Dissolved oxygen in waters, Amendment 1988)
Procedure recommended by the Standing Committee of Analysts of the UK Department of the Environment
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The effect of the test substance on the degree of biodegradation of two easily biodegradable substances, glucose and glutamic acid, was also considered to measure the inhibition potential of the substance.

Basis for effect:
other: Inhibition of biodegradation of glucose/glutamate
Details on results:
After 5 days of exposition, the inhibition of glucose/glutamate biodegradation was 100% at concentrations of 10 and 100 mg/L, and of 78% at 1 mg/L.
Therefore, the test material was inhibitory to the microorganisms at all tested concentrations.
Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:
In this test the inhibitory effect of the test substance on the biodegradation of two easily biodegradable substances was studied.
The test material showed little inhibition.
Executive summary:

In this study, the inhibitory effect of the test substance Tributyl(ethyl) phosphonium diethylphosphate on the biodegradation of two easily biodegradable substances (glucose and glutamic acid) was tested according to a UK guideline (Methods for Examination of Waters and Associated Materials: 5 Day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5)).

The degree of inhibition of the degradation of the two reference substances was 19% at 100 mg/L; 15% at 10 mg/L and 16% at 1 mg/L. Therefore, it was concluded that the substance showed little inhibitory effect to the microorganisms.
