The test item shows an endothermic effect in the temperature range of 160 – 190 °C, which can be associated with a melting of the test item (melting point according to the certificate of analysis 171.2 – 171.7 °C). A second endothermic effect was observed in the temperature range of 250 – 310 °C, which can be assigned to a boiling of the test item accompanied by decomposition. No further thermal effects could be observed up to the maximum test temperature of 500 °C.

For the correction of the boiling temperature to normal pressure the test item was assigned to chemical group 4 (e.g. Cresols). According to appendix 8.2a correction value φ = 5.65 was used for a temperature of 300 °C.

The lowest measured onset temperature is corrected to the normal pressure to be 293.42°C and the highest onset temperature to be 298.12°C. The corrected temperatures of the boiling point differ more than 0.5 K from their mean value of 295.77°C. The test item has a boiling range under atmospheric pressure (1013 hPa) from 293 °C to 298 °C accompanied by decomposition.

Trimethylhydroquinone has a boiling point of 293-298°C at 1013 hPa accompanied by decomposition as determined by differential scanning calorimetry and capillary method.
