Thermal stability

One DSC-measurement in a closed glass crucible with the test item showed an endothermal effect in the temperature range of 140 - 170 °C and several exothermal effects in the temperature range of 170 - 270 °C, 300 - 415 °C and 425 - 460 °C with an overall energy release of 644 J/g.

The heat of decomposition was above 500 J/g. Therefore, the main test on explosive properties had to be performed.

Mechanical sensitivity (friction):

The test item was sieved (mesh size 0.5 mm) before the measurement. No explosion occurred within 6 tests using a pinload of 360 N, only a discoloration of the test item was observed in all tests.

Mechanical sensitivity (shock):

The test item was sieved (mesh size 0.5 mm) before the measurement. No explosion within 6 tests using a mass of 10 kg falling from a height of 0.4 m was observed.

Thermal sensitivity:

Three tests were performed with a circular nozzle plate with a hole of 2 mm diameter. No explosion was observed.

Executive summary:

A study according to Regulation (EC) 440/2008 Method A.14 was performed to determine the explosive properties of the test item. The test item was tested for mechanical sensitivity (shock), mechanical sensitivity (friction) and thermal sensitivity. For the mechanical sensitivity (shock) the test item was subjected to the shock of a falling hammer on a steel anvil from a specified height with a specified weight and for the mechanical sensitivity (friction) the test item was subjected to friction between standard surfaces under specified conditions of load and relative motion. For the thermal sensitivity the test item was heated in a steel tube, with various degrees of confinement being provided by nozzle-plates with different diameters (2 mm and 6 mm) of orifice, to determine whether the substance is liable to explode under conditions of thermal stress and confinement. The test item was found to have no explosive properties.

Based on the chemical structure and taking into account the provisions laid down in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance is not considered to be classified for explosive properties.
