Additional information

In the key skin irritation study, conducted according to an appropriate OECD test guideline, and in compliance with GLP the test substance, trimethyl(octadecyloxy)silane, was reported to be not irritating to rabbit skin (Aventis, 2001).

0.5 mL of undiluted test item was applied for 4 hours onto the skin of clipped dorsal area of 3 rabbits. The test item was kept in contact with the skin under semi-occlusive dressing. The exposure area was washed with warm tap water after the exposure period. Skin responses were observed at 30 min and 60 min, then at 24, 48 and 72 hours post-application. No erythema or oedema were noted in any of the test animals. No other signs of irritation were noted in any of the test animals.

In the key eye irritation study, conducted according to an appropriate OECD test guideline, and in compliance with GLP the test substance, trimethyl(octadecyloxy)silane, was reported to be not irritating to rabbit eyes (Aventis, 2001).

0.1 mL of undiluted test item was applied into the eyes of 3 rabbits for 24 hours. Isotonic saline at approximately 37°C was used for washing off any residual test item following the exposure period. Eye responses were noted at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours post-instillation. Hyperaemic blood vessels of the conjunctivae were noted in 2 animals at 1 hour after treatment. Additionally, serious and colourless eye discharge was observed. No signs of irritation were observed at 24 hours post-exposure in any of the test animals.

According to ECHA's disseminated dossier, octadecan-1 -ol has been tested for skin and eye irritation in reliable studies conducted according to appropriate OECD test guidelines and in compliance with GLP. The test substance was reported to be not irritating to skin or eyes. No clinical effects were reported in any of the test animals.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data for trimethyl(octadecyloxy)silane, no classification is required for skin and eye irritation according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.
