The physico-chemical properties of the category members are similar or follow a regular pattern over the category. Justification and rationale of the category approach for Ethyl Caprate
This category group covers fatty acid chains linked to alcohols via an ester function. It includes mono-constituent substances and UVCB substances with varying fatty acid chain lengths from C8 to C18-unsaturated and alcohol types (including ethanol, isopropanol, octanol, hexanol and 2-ethylhexanol). This category group was made in order to provide sufficient information for physico-chemical, environmental, ecotoxicological and toxicological characterization of ethyl decanoate (CAS 110-38-3). Some data on the target substance of the category are available.

Summary of available studies on source substances for the auto-flammability
Experimental results were obtained from key studies performed on Isopropyl laurate, octyl octanoate, isopropyl myristate, dodecanoic hexyl ester, 2-ethylhexyl laurate and fatty acids coco 2-ethylhexyl esters. Auto flammability values at atmospheric pression obtained for these category members are between 225 and 345°C at 1013 hPa. These high values are related to the similarity of structures of the category members and to the lack of auto-flammability hazard. Based on this categoyy approach, the auto-flammability of Ethyl decanoate, is considered to be ≥ 225°C at 1013 hPa.
An experimental study on the target substance, Ethyl decanoate, was also performed according to the ASTM E659 method (only method and results provided) and it gives a value of 382°C at 998.6 hPa.
Moreover since the target substance is a liquid with no flash point up to 200°C, its auto-flammability can be waived according to column 2, Annex VI of REACH.
Conclusion
According to the Regulation (EC) NO. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, a Read-Across Category for " Medium Chain Fatty Acid (from C8 to C18 unsat.) and alcohol esters (from C2 to C8) was performed in order to provide information on Ethyl decanoate.
This category was based on common and shared properties as:
- common functional group,
- common precursors and the likelihood of common impurities resulting from common process of manufacturing,
- chemically structurally similar breakdown products obtained via the same biological processes into the organisms, and
- constant pattern in the changing of the potency of the properties across the category.
Based on the results obtained with the category members, it can be deduced that the target substance, Ethyl decanoate, has an auto-flammability ≥ 225°C at 1013 hPa.
Moreover an experimental study on Ethyl decanoate was also performed according to the ASTM E659 method and the value of 382°C at 998.6 hPa was obtained (only method and results provided). This experimental value confirms the lack of auto-flammability hazard of Ethyl decanoate and it is considered as relevant for auto-flammability assessment.
