Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Self-protection of the first aider: No action shall be taken involving any personal risk or without suitable training. It may be dangerous to the person providing aid to give mouth-to mouth resuscitation. Use personal protective equipment as required. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, avoid direct contact. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Contaminated clothing should be laundered before reuse.

If inhaled: If inhaled and breathing is difficult, remove to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

In case of skin contact: Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water. If symptoms develop and persist, call a physician.

In case of eye contact: Immediately flush eye(s) with plenty of water. May cause permanent damage if eye is not immediately irrigated. Obtain prompt medical attention, preferably from an ophthalmologist.

If swallowed: If swallowed, call a poison centre or doctor immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media: Substance is not flammable. Use extinguishing media that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment. Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Direct water jet may spread the fire.

Specific hazards during firefighting: Direct water jet may spread the fire. Decomposes in a fire giving off toxic fumes: Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide.

Do not allow run-off from fire fighting to enter drains or water courses.

Special protective equipment for firefighters: Fight fire with normal precautions from a reasonable distance. Fire fighters should wear complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Keep containers cool by spraying with water if exposed to fire. Avoid release to the environment. Avoid generating dust; fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source is a potential dust explosion hazard.

Accidental release measures

Ensure adequate ventilation.

Personal precautions: Caution - spillages may be slippery. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Ensure suitable personal protection during removal of spillages. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Environmental precautions: Prevent uncontrolled releases to sewers, drains or other watercourses.

Methods for cleaning up: Recover if possible. Pick up/sweep up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal. Ensure contaminated surfaces are cleaned. Dispose of this material and its container as hazardous waste.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling: Ensure operatives are trained to minimise exposures. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not ingest. Wear protective gloves/eye protection. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash hands before breaks and after work.

Persons susceptible to skin sensitisation problems or asthma, allergies, chronic or recurrent respiratory disease should not be employed in any process in which this mixture is being used.

Avoid formation of respirable particles. Avoid dust formation.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion: Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Avoid dust formation in confined areas.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in original container. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. Stable under recommended storage conditions.

Incompatible materials: None known.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) for Formaldehyde CAS 50-00-0 exist in a number of countries and vary between countries.

For the United Kingdom (EH40/2005) the values are:

8-hr time-weighted average (TWA): 2ppm / 2.5 mg/m3

Short-term expsoure limit (STEL): 2ppm / 2.5 mg/m3

Individual protection measures and appropriate engineering controls: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Ensure material transfers are under containment or extract ventilation. Provide a good standard of general or controlled ventilation (5 to 15 air changes per hour).

Eye protection: Use safety glasses/goggles with side protection according to EN 166.

Hand protection: Wear suitable chemical resistant protective gloves for frequent or prolonged operations tested to EN374 with an acceptable permeation test. Contaminated gloves should be disposed of after use.

Skin protection: Wear suitable coveralls to prevent exposure to the skin. Wash contaminated clothing after use.

Respiratory protection: In the case of dust or aerosol formation use respirator with an approved filter.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity, chemical stability and hazardous reactions: Stable under recommended storage conditions.

Conditions to avoid: Avoid direct sunlight, elevated temperatures. Avoid dust formation.

Incompatible materials: Avoid contact with strong oxidising agents.

Hazardous decomposition product(s): None known.

Disposal considerations

Substance: Dispose of this substance as hazardous waste at authorised waste collection point.

Contaminated packaging: Empty remaining contents. Do not re-use empty containers. Empty containers should be taken to an approved waste handling site for recycling or disposal.
