Preliminary test:
During the heating the test item glowed. during the igition period of 5 minutes the test item was not ignited. The flame imiidiately extinguished when the flame was removed. No burning or glowing spreaded over the length of the pile was observed. The test was repeated with the same results at the oether end of the pile.
Main test:
The main test was not performed because no ignition or glowing over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test.
Description of key information
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, Section 1, testing of flammability is not considered to be required for magnesium diniobate (MgNb2O6) as it is already oxidized and has an oxygen content of 19 %. The substance diniobium pentaoxide (Nb2O5) was tested according to EU Method A.10 for Flammability (solids) (Section 4.13 Flammability: s_Walter_2010_Flammability solids_RA Nb2O5). Diniobium pentaoxide was classified as "not highly flammable". Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance is not flammable. This substance is considered non-flammable.
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, Section 1, testing of flammability in contact with water is not considered to be required, because magnesium diniobate does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Recent experimental testing for water solubility has also not reported any formation of gases. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of magnesium diniobate shows that it does not react with water and will not ignite with water or humid air.
In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, Section 1, testing for pyrophoric properties of solids is not considered to be required, since magnesium diniobate does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (ca. 20 °C). Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that magnesium diniobate does not ignite (spontaneously) in contact with air.
