Ecotoxicological information

Long-term toxicity to fish

Administrative data

Endpoint:
adult fish: sub(lethal) effects
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
Available ecotoxicity data on (hydrogen) fluoride up to 1998 was reviewed and summarised by the European Chemicals Bureau (ECB). Although detail on design and methodology is very limited in this report, endpoints and conclusions are considered suitably reliable for environmental risk assessment as the substance was assessed as part of the EU-RAR and in accordance with Council Regulation (EEC) 793/93 on the evaluation and control of risks of existing substances.

Results and discussion

Effect concentrations
Duration:
21 d
Dose descriptor:
NOEC
Effect conc.:
4 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
meas. (not specified)
Conc. based on:
other: fluoride ion (F-)
Basis for effect:
mortality
Details on results:
In a 21 day test with Oncorhynchus mykiss a LC5 value of 4 mg/L was reported (actual concentration). This value is considered to be equivalent to the NOEC for mortality. The test was conducted in very soft (12 mg CaCO3/L) natural water with daily renewal of the test water.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:
The 21-d LC5 value (equivalent to the NOEC) is 4 mg/L in Oncorhynchus mykiss.
Executive summary:

In a 21 day test with Oncorhynchus mykiss a LC5 value of 4 mg/L was reported (actual concentration). This value is considered to be equivalent to the NOEC for mortality. The test was conducted in very soft (12 mg CaCO3/L) natural water with daily renewal of the test water.
