Description of key information

A key study is reported together with seven supporting references relating to the appearance, physical state, colour and odour of 2,4-dichlorophenol. 2,4-Dichlorophenol is a white crystalline solid / powder with a strong, unpleasant, characteristsic and penetrating phenolic type odour.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Physical state at 20°C and 1013 hPa:
solid

Additional information

A key study is presented supported by seven additional references. These are summarised in the table below :-

 Appearance Colour  Form Odour Reference
Solid  White   No Data Characteristic of phenolic compounds Hutton L (2010)

Solid  Colourless  Crystalline  Characteristic of aromatic compounds Chemical Safety Information from Intergovernmental Organisation

The key study reports the substance to be a white solid at 20 °C and 25 °C with a characteristic phenolic odour.

Of the supporting references, the first is from a peer reviewed source (CRC Handbook of Chemsitry and Physics) and reports the substance as hexagonal needles of benzene.

The second reference from the SIDS (Screening Information Data Set) dossier reports that the substance is a white crystalline solid with a characteristic and penetrating odour.

An additional reference from the International Program on Chemical Safety reports the substance to be colourless crystals with a charcateristic odour.

Other references via toxnet ( http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov ) report the substance to be a white to pale yellow solid with "strong medicinal" type odour.

Therefore, from practical experience and from literature references it is concluded that the appearance and physical state of the substance is a white crystalline solid / powder (which can be present as needles of benzene) with a strong, unpleasant, characteristsic and penetrating phenolic type odour.
