Discussion
No experimental data on short-term toxicity to fish are available for the substance itself. Therefore, the ecotoxicological potential was assessed based on data available for the primary degradation product methacrylic acid (CAS 79-41-4 ) and the close structural analogues isotridecyl methacrylate (CAS 94247-05-9), octadecyl methacrylate (CAS 32360-05-7), methacrylic acid ester 13.6 (CAS 90552-04-8) and methacrylic acid ester of an alcohol mixture with a mean C-number of 15 (CAS 90551-77-2). In accordance with Annex XI section 1.2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the information was evaluated in a weight of evidence approach.
In a static 96 h fish acute toxicity test (OECD 203, GLP) zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to the close structural analogue isotridecyl methacrylate (CAS 94247-05-9) at nominal concentrations of 0 (negative control), 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 mg/L (Evonik Röhm GmbH, UNTER 89-012, 1989). During the test, the temperature was 23 °C ± 1 °C, the pH 7.8 ± 0.2 and the dissolved oxygen concentration was about 7.88 mg/L. No mortality occured; the LC0 value was > 10000 mg/L. Concentrations used in the test are clearly above the water solubility of isotridecyl methacrylate. Despite the fact that the test therefore has to be considered as limited in validity from a technical point of view, it can be concluded that saturated solutions of the close structural analogue isotridecyl methacrylate (CAS 94247-05-9) are non-toxic to fish.
In a GLP-compliant static test according to OECD 203, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed over a duration of 96 hours to the close structural analogue octadecyl methacrylate (CAS 32360-05-7) at nominal concentrations of 0 (negative control) 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 mg/L (Evonik RohMax Additives GmbH, UNTER 88-014, 1988). Concentrations used in the test are clearly above the water solubility of octadecyl methacrylate. During the test, the temperature was 23 °C ± 1 °C, the pH 7.8 ± 0.2 and the dissolved oxygen concentration was 8.05 mg/L. No mortalities were observed, the LC0 value of the close structural analogue octadecyl methacrylate (CAS 32360-05-7) was > 10000 mg/L. Despite the fact that the test therefore has to be considered as limited in validity from a technical point of view, it can be concluded that saturated solutions of the close structural analogue octadecyl methacrylate (CAS 32360-05 -7) are non-toxic to fish.
In a static 96 h fish acute toxicity test (OECD 203, GLP) with Brachydanio rerio (Danio rerio) were exposed to the close stuctural analogue methacrylic acid ester 13.6 (CAS 90552-04-8) (Evonik Röhm GmbH, UNTER 88-016,1988). Saturated emulsion was tested at concentratiosn up to 10000 mg/L in nominal (clearly above the water solubility of methacrylic acid ester 13.6). Despite the fact that the test therefore has to be considered as limited in validity from a technical point of view, it can be concluded that saturated solutions of the close stuctural analogue methacrylic acid ester 13.6 (CAS 90552-04-8) are non-toxic to fish. No mortalities were observed; the LC0 value was > 10000 mg/L.

No mortalities were observed, the LC0 value was > 10000 mg/L. Concentrations used in the test are clearly above the water solubility of the structural analogue. Despite the fact that the test therefore has to be considered as limited in validity from a technical point of view, it can be concluded that saturated solutions of the close structural analogue methacrylic acid ester of an alcohol mixture with a mean C-number of 15 (CAS 0551-77-2) are non-toxic to fish.
Overall conclusion
Concentrations used in the available tests are up to five orders of magnitude above the water solubility of the long-chain methacrylate esters (C12–C22) which is < 1 µg/l. Therefore, emulsions or even two-layer systems of the esters with water have been tested instead of solutions setting a limitation to the validity of the studies. However, it appears that saturated solutions of the long-chain methacrylate esters are non-toxic to fish. Further acute toxicity to fish studies on long-chain methacrylate esters with limited documentation are confirming these test results. The LC50 [96 h] > 10000 mg / L determined in the most current and reliable study (Evonik Röhm GmbH, UNTER 89-012, 1989) for the close structural analogue isotridecyl methacrylate (CAS 94247-05-9) is regarded as key information. Based on this result, the 96-h LC50 for docosyl methacrylate (CAS 16669-27-5) is considered to be > 10000 mg/L.
