Description of key information

There are two studies available on the acute toxicity ofbis(hydroxylammonium)sulphate to Daphnids.

A study on the acute toxicity of for aquatic invertebrates using Daphnia magna performed according to guideline 67/548/EEC, C.2 is available (BASF AG 1988a). The effects were determined using eight (nominal) concentrations between 0.16 and 20 mg/l. In each concentration 20 individuals were tested in four parallels. During the exposure temperature was between 19 and 21°C and pH between 7.0 and 8.0. No effects on mobility were observed in the lower concentrations up to 1.25 mg/l. In 2.5 mg/l all daphnids were immobile after 48 hours of static exposure. The EC50 (48 h) is calculated to be 1.6 mg/l. Despite the lack of analytical verification of the tested concentrations the results based on nominal concentrations are considered reliable and used for the chemical safety assessment.

The EC50 determined in this test is confirmed by a publication of the National Association of Photographic Manufactures (1974) where, among other substances, the effects of bis(hydroxylammonium)sulphate on Daphnia magna were tested in a static system for 96 hours. The LC50 determined in this test under static exposure for 96 hours was 1.2 mg/l. Since no detailed information about the test is available and concentrations were not measured, this study is considered as supportive.
