Description of key information

Some cobalt(II) compounds demonstrated sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity in experimental animals.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

Overall evaluation according to IARC Monographs Volume 52:

Cobalt and cobalt compounds are possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

International Agency for Cancer Research (1991). IARC Monographs on the evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans, Volume 52. Cobalt and cobalt compounds. IARC 1991 52.

Overall evaluation according to MAK, 33. Lieferung, 2001:

The whole group of soluble cobalt(II)-compounds was classified as Carcinogen Category 2 because in mechanistic studies the cobalt(II)-ion was identified as the active component.

MAK, 33. Lieferung (2001). Cobalt und Cobaltverbindungen (in Form atembarer Stäube/Aerosole).

Overall evaluation according to IARC Monographs Volume 86:

Cobalt sulfate and other soluble cobalt(II) salts are possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

International Agency for Cancer Research (2006). IARC Monographs on the evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans, Volume 86. Cobalt in hard metals and cobalt sulfate, gallium arsenide, indium phosphide and vanadium pentoxide. IARC 2006 86.

Additional information

There is sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of cobalt(II) oxide and cobalt (II) sulfate in experimental animals.
