Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The substance has a logKow of less than 2, therefore this screening criterion doesn't qualify DMDS for B.

A 310 study is available with 50-60% biodegradation in 28 days

Although no biodegradation has been observed so far in water or water/sediment compartment, biodegradation in soil has been demonstrated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions with T1/2 << 120 days (14 days in anaerobic conditions). Additionnaly, several experiments have been carried out in atmospheric chambers of small and large size that atmospheric half-life of DMDS is about 40 minutes in normal conditions. This duration can decrease to 15 minutes in polluted areas (in presence of NOx). Photodegradation products identified are HCHO, SO2, CH3SO3H which are not themselves persistents. Conclusively, DMDS does not qualify for P.

DMDS qualifies for T, based on chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates (NOEC repro daphnia = 0.0025 mg/L)
