No study is available on the short-term toxicity of azelaic acid to aquatic invertebrates. However, a study investigating the short-term toxicity of decanoic acid is available and used as read across based on a category approach. Both substances are structurally and compositionally related. Due to an increasing toxicity with increasing chain length from octanoic acid (C8) to lauric acid (C12) for fish, the study for decanoic acid (C10) represents a worst case for azelaic acid (C9), probably overestimating the toxicity for azelaic acid.

In this study (Ministry of the Environment of Japan, 1999) with Daphnia magna conducted according to OECD 202 an EC50 >21 mg/L (meas. geom. mean) was determined. No effects were observed in the range of the tested concentration (21 mg/L meas. geom. mean).
