Description of key information

Oral: LD50 (rat) = 503 mg/kg bw (Tricobalt dicitrate; recalculated value from cobalt(II)sulfate heptahydrate)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Oral

There are no data available on the acute oral toxicity of Tricobalt dicitrate. However, there are reliable data available for the structurally related compound cobalt sulphate heptahydrate. Thus, read-across was conducted based on a structural analogue.

The acute oral LD50 value in rats was 503 mg/kg bw (Tricobalt dicitrate; recalculated value from cobalt(II)sulfate heptahydrate) (Speijers et al., 1982). No mortality data were reported. The highest dose level caused sedation and diarrhoea. Rats showed tremors and convulsions prior to death. In all animals, a decrease in body temperature was recorded. No pathologic or histopathologic examinations were performed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

There are no data available on the acute oral toxicity of Tricobalt dicitrate. However, there are reliable data available for the structurally related compound cobalt(II)sulfate heptahydrate. Thus, read-across was conducted based on a structural analogue.
