A study was performed in order to evaluate the toxic potential of Nicotinsäurepentylester towards freshwater fish, using the species Danio rerio HAMILTON BUCHANAN .The study was conducted in accordance with the following guidelines :
- OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals No. 203, adopted July 17th 1992 „Fish, Acute Toxicity Test"
- EU-Guideline C.1 „Akute Toxizität für Fische", adopted July 31st 1992
The study was conducted in compliance with the Principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). The validity criteria were met.
In the initial experiment, three concentrations of the test item (100; 10 and 1 mg/L) were used. For each concentration, three fish were exposed to the test item for 96 hours. At the concentration 100 mg/L 100 % mortality could be observed. At 10 and 1 mg/L, no fish showed any sign of morbidity at the end of the test. The pH and the oxygen value of the treatments were normal. The main study was performed as a static test using five concentrations between 10 and 63 mg/L. In all treatments, every fish died within 24 hours. Then a second static test was performed using three concentrations between 2,5 and 6,3 mg/L. The fish of all treatments survived. No fish showed any signs of morbidity at the end of the test. The real concentration of the test item in the treatments of the main studies was determined before and after the test. As in the second study, less than 10% of the concentration at the beginning of the test were found at the end of the test, the test item was considered as not stable under the test conditions.
Therefore a semi static test using four concentrations between 2,5 and 10 mg/L was performed. But the recovery after 24 hours showed the same elimination of the test item in the treatments. Therefore the test was abandoned after 48 hours. For the determination of the result, the geometric mean of the real concentrations of the static tests was used.
The following result was determined for the test item Nicotinsäurepentylester acute toxicity test against Danio rerio HAMILTON BUCHANAN :
96h-LC50 = 3,1 mg/L
