A preliminary thermogravimetric measurement was performed over a temperature range from room temperature to 600°C. Two steps in the mass curve are registered: The first (peak maximum at 301°C) shows a major mass loss of 92.8%, while practically the rest of the sample disappears around 435°C (peak maximum). Considering another 0.2 % mass loss during purging before the start of the measurement the total mass loss was 99.5%. After cooling a dark coating was found on the crucible bottom.

A major endothermic peak is registered with a peak maximum temperature at 287°C and an extrapolated onset temperature of 244°C, followed by two smaller endothermic peaks (378-380°C and 447-450°C). The mass loss after the measurement was 97.8%.

The first deviation of the thermogravimetric curve from the baseline is noticed at ca. 200°C, indicating the beginning of decomposition.

Conclusions:
No boiling point for MDIPA Esterquat C18 unsatd. could be found prior to decomposition at ca. 200°C.
