Description of key information

The effect of the test item on the earthworm reproduction was assessed according to an OECD test n°222. The results obtained allowed to conclude that, taking into account the mortality, the growth and the reproduction of the exposed adults test organisms, the highest concentration of the test item without inhibitory effect on Eisenia fetida after the test period was determined to be, at least, 1 000.0 mg/ kg dry soil (highest tested concentration).

Additional information

According to ECHA guide R7C, the test species should ideally cover different habitats and feeding modes in the soil as well as different taxonomic groups. For strongly adsorbing or binding substances soil-dwelling organisms that feed on soil particles (e.g. earthworms) are most relevant. Plants are exposed mainly by a soil pore water pathway, whearas earthworms are exposed to the substance by diverse and multiple uptake routes (soil pore water, ingestion of soil material, soil air, secondary poisoning). Furthermore, the substances in the category are highly insoluble; for uptake by plants, the substance needs to go into solution (interstitial or pore water) before exposure can occur, therefore testing the substances in plants is considered irrelevant. So other terrestrial test are not needed.
