Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

General Information

Name:
Benzalkonium chloride - on-site isolated intermediate
Implementation:
EU
Remarks:
This on-site isolated intermediate is manufactured primarily from C12-C14 alkyldimethylamines in IMS and reacted with benzyl chloride. The substance formed has been shown to be consistent with benzalkonium chloride (BAC) CAS# 68424-85-1, and whilst the analysis of the individual end points has not been carried out on this intermediate it is justified that the classification assigned will be similar to the agreed classification for BAC as detailed in the BPD dossier, Directive 98/8/EC concerning the placing of biocidal products on the market, submitted June 2010.
BAC which is not used for biocides is being REACH registered by the end of May 2013. The classification as published to members of the SIEF has been assessed from the phys-chem, toxicology and eco-toxicology data available in the consortium and has been communicated for use in classifying this substance. However, in addition to the hazards associated with BAC, this classification has also taken into account the contribution of the Industrial Methylated Spirits solvent component and also the fact that there may still be some benzyl chloride impurity present to a max of 0.25%. These two components add the flammability and posiible carcinogenic activity not normally associated with BAC classification.
