- The range-finding test was conducted at nominal test substance concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10 and 100 mg/L. A control group containing ASTM medium only was also included. Duplicate test vessels were prepared for each test substance concentration and control. Based on nominal concentrations, the results of the range-finding test suggested that the 48-hour EC50 value would be greater than 100 mg/L.
Based on the results of the range-finding test which is not fully reported, the definitive test was conducted at single nominal test substance concentration of 125 mg/L. This test design constitutes a ‘Limit Test’ to determine that, at the maximum concentration defined by the test guideline of 100 mg/L, no immobilisation was observed. A concentration of 125 mg/L was used to ensure measured concentrations were as close to 100 mg/L as possible.

The limit of detection (LOD) for Methylfuranoside in ASTM medium using this method was 0.032 mg/L.
Samples of test media were taken for chemical analysis at 0 and 24 hours (new test media) and at 24 and 48 hours (old test media). Chemistry analysis of the new media taken at 0 and 24 hours showed concentrations of Methylfuranoside to be 120 and 122 mg/L, respectively. Chemistry analysis of the old media at 24 and 48 hours showed concentrations of Methylfuranoside to be 140 and 118 mg/L, respectively. Nominal concentrations were achieved on preparation and were maintained for the duration of the test therefore the results will be reported as nominal concentrations.

The test preparations were observed to be colourless solutions throughout the duration of the test.
Toxicity to daphnia
After 48 hours, the concentration at which no significant (=10%) immobility occurred was 125 mg/L. The NOEC was therefore 125 mg/L.
The 48-hour EC50 value was determined to be greater than 125 mg/L.

- The 48-hour acute toxicity of Methylfuranoside to the freshwater planktonic crustacean, Daphnia magna, was determined in accordance with the requirements of OECD Chemicals Testing Guideline No. 202 Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test (adopted April 13 2004).
The validity criteria for control immobility (=10%) and dissolved oxygen (>60% ASV) were both satisfied. The test is therefore considered valid.
The 48-hour EC50 value was determined to be greater than 125 mg/L.
It is concluded that Methylfuranoside was considered non toxic to Daphnia magna at nominal concentrations less than 125 mg/L under the conditions of this test.
