The data on the physical and chemical properties of bismuth trinitrate were taken from handbooks (including CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 2007; The Merck Index, 2006), public databases (e.g. Gestis database on hazardous substances 2009) or MSDSs.

New testing in accordance with OECD or EU guidelines was conducted to obtain information about: melting and boiling points, particle size distribution, water solubility and oxidising properties.

Waivers are proposed for vapour pressure, partition coefficient, surface tension, flash point, auto flammability, pyrophoric properties, flammability in contact with water, flammability, explosiveness, stability in organic solvents, dissociation constant and viscosity.

Bismuth trinitrate is a colourless, hygroscopic substance and under atmospheric conditions only stable in the hydrated from (e.g. pentahydrate).

Melting point of Bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate: 73°C (according to OECD 102)

Boiling point of Bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate: no boiling point under atmospheric conditions up to 600°C (according to OECD 103)

Relative density of Bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate: 2.83 (reliable handbook data)

Particle size distribution of Bismuth (III) trinitrate pentahydrate (according to OECD 110- Particle size distribution):

D10= 215.1 µm

D50= 912.3 µm

D90= >2000 µm

Water solubility: 50-2180 mg/L at ambient temperature. (GLP and guideline study; according to OECD guideline 105)

Oxidising properties: oxidising in the sense of Division 5.1 Packing Group II of the Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part 34.4.1 (Test O.1). The substance is classified as an oxidising solid category 2 in accordance with the CLP Regulation.
