Results:
In Experiment 1, three exothermic effects were observed between 75°C and 250°C. The extrapolated onset temperatures of the effects were 100.482°C (first effect), 181.900°C (second effect) and 202.981°C (third effect). The exothermic decomposition energy of the effects were 4.7973 J/g (first effect), 54.901 J/g (second effect) and 40.822 J/g (third effect). Since multiple exothermic effects were observed, the sum of the exothermic decomposition energy was determined (i.e. 100.520 J/g).
In Experiment 2 no exothermic decomposition effects were observed. After the experiments, a black molten residue remained at the bottom of the sample container and some scale was observed at the outside of the sample lid. It indicated reaction and/or decomposition of the test item during the test.
Conclusion
The explosive properties of N-[3-(dimethyloxidoamino)propyl]-dodecanamide (freeze dried) were evaluated using DSC. Exothermic decomposition of the test item was observed at a temperature between 100.482°C and 202.981°C. The exothermic decomposition energy was 100.520 J/g. According to this it was considered that the test item has no explosive properties.
