Materials and methods
Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: Guideline issued by Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, United Kingdom, AEP2, 1984
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- 96-h exposure of marine species Crangon crangon to 5 concentrations of the test substance under semi-static conditions. Mortality is recorded.
- GLP compliance:
- no
Test material
- Reference substance name:
- Isopropyl oleate
- EC Number:
- 203-935-4
- EC Name:
- Isopropyl oleate
- Cas Number:
- 112-11-8
- Molecular formula:
- C21H40O2
- IUPAC Name:
- isopropyl octadec-9-enoate
Constituent 1
Sampling and analysis
- Analytical monitoring:
- no
Test solutions
- Vehicle:
- no
- Details on test solutions:
- PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF TEST SOLUTION (especially for difficult test substances)
- Method: Since the test material was immiscible with water, constant stirring of test solution was applied to ensure a reasonable amount of test substance remained in suspension. The tests animals where shielded from the stirrer.
- Evidence of undissolved material (e.g. precipitate, surface film, etc): yes, a floating layer above the test solution
Test organisms
- Test organisms (species):
- Crangon crangon
- Details on test organisms:
- TEST ORGANISM
- Common name: Brown shrimp
- Source: wild cought by Mr. R.J. Pipe in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex; specimen collected in lower estuary, River Crouch, on 27th Feb 1991
- Weight at study initiation: mean weight 1.072 g ± 0.221 g
- Length at study initiation: mean length 50.9 mm ± 3.285 mm
- Feeding during test: no
ACCLIMATION/HOLDING
- Acclimation conditions: at least two days holding prior the test in artificial seawater (Marinemix), formulated by Wiegandt GmbH in the same temperature range as in main test
- feeding during acclimation: minced ox heart (approx. 1% of body weight per day)
- no further data on conditions and observations during acclimation are provided
Study design
- Test type:
- semi-static
- Water media type:
- saltwater
- Limit test:
- no
- Total exposure duration:
- 96 h
Test conditions
- Test temperature:
- 14.48 °C (mean)
- pH:
- 7.8 - 8.4
- Dissolved oxygen:
- 83 - 89% (air saturation value)
- Nominal and measured concentrations:
- nominal: 850, 1530, 2640, 4760 and 8500 mg/L
- Details on test conditions:
- TEST SYSTEM
- Test vessel: 10 L glass aquaria
- Aeration: constant; air continuously diffused through the aquaria

TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
- Source/preparation of dilution water: Artificial seawater (Marinemix), formulated by Wiegandt GmbH
OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Photoperiod: 16 h light/ 8 h dark
EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED: mortality after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h
TEST CONCENTRATIONS
- Range finding study: was conducted, no details given - Reference substance (positive control):
- no
Results and discussion
Effect concentrations
- Duration:
- 96 h
- Dose descriptor:
- LC50
- Effect conc.:
- > 8 500 mg/L
- Nominal / measured:
- nominal
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Basis for effect:
- mortality
- Details on results:
- - No mortality observed at all concentrations (0 - 8500 mg/L) during the test period of 96 hours.
- Part of the test sample was observed to remain on the liquid surface, even with continuous stirring. The agitation was sufficient to maintain a distribution within the body of the liquid, but at higher concentrations the thickness of the floating layer increased. Thus concentrations above 1% v/v were not evaluated.
