Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
see below 'Principles of method if other than guideline'
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The typical methods proposed by the OECD are:
a) Column elution method
b) Flask method.
After pre-tests both, method a) and method b), could not be directly applied on the specific requirements of this compound/mixture. So an acceptable modification of this proposed methods was necessary. Based on this the laboratory established an appropriate method for the determination of water solubility.
GLP compliance:
no
Other quality assurance:
ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories)
Type of method:
other: visual method
Key result
Water solubility:
680 g/L
Temp.:
25 °C
Remarks on result:
other: pH unknown
Details on results:
- solvent: 5 mL water
- dissolved compound 3400 mg within four days
- higher amounts result a „suspension“
Conclusions:
680 g/L at 25°C
Executive summary:

The column elution and the shake flask method according to OECD 105 proved to be not applicable for the substance 'Decanoic acid, 3-[[6-deoxy-2-O-(6-deoxy-α-L-mannopyranosyl)-α-L-mannopyranosyl]oxy]-, 1-(carboxymethyl)octyl ester, mixt. with 1-(carboxymethyl)octyl 3-[(6-deoxy-α-L-mannopyranosyl)oxy]decanoate'. Therefore, the water solubility was estimated by the following procedure: The dissolution of the test compound was realised in the first steps with the application of each 200 mg of powdered substance into the solvent/solution to induce primary a dissolution in an ultrasonic bath. After a few steps the viscosity increased, so that the treatment with ultrasonic waves showed no effect. The only possible treatment was a carefully shaking process over a long time period (about 4h each). After this time a dissolution could be detected as a missing of solid particles in the high viscous clear solution. The end point was achieved if no more solid compound could be dissolved.

The water solubility of the test material was determined to be 680 g/L at 25°C.
