Evaluation of Data:

In order to determine the surface tension, the mean sample solution reading was calculated from those values obtained that were considered to be on a plateau. The surface tension is given in mN/m (SI sub-unit).

Discussion:

The torsion balance was checked for accuracy using a 0.500 g certified weight. According to criteria mentioned in EC Method A.5, substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this method should be regarded as being surface-active.

The mean surface tension of duplicate saturated solutions of test item in water has been determined to be 42.2 mN/m at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C. The test item was considered to be surface-active.

An instrumentation calibration was performed using purified water. Duplicate 90 % saturated solutions of test item in purified water, were prepared, introduced to the appliance and thermally equilibrated to 20.0 °C ± 0.5 °C.  Two tests were carried out, the surface tension of each solution was measured repeatedly until the last five determinations were equal or differed by less than 0.5 mN/m.

The mean surface tension following measurement of duplicate 90 % saturated solutions of test item in purified water was determined to be 42.4 mN/m at 20.1 °C.
