Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference substance:
Alkanes, C10-13-iso-
PBT status:
further information relevant for the PBT assessment is necessary
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for Alkanes, C10-13-iso- (CAS 68551-17-7) is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2017).

Persistence
One experimental study according to OECD 301F is available investigating the biodegradation of Alkanes, C10-13-iso-. This study resulted in a low degradation of 8.4% (O2 consumption) indicating that the substance is not readily biodegradable and potentially fulfils the P/vP criterion.
However, since the substance is poorly soluble in water it might be the case that the result from the study does not reflect the real biodegradation potential.

Bioaccumulation
The potential of the substance to bioaccumulate was not assessed since it is no data requirement according to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VIII. Moreover, it is considered justified to investigate the potential of the substance to meet the P/vP criteria first. If the substance is assumed to meet the P/vP criteria the bioaccumulation potential will be assessed further. This approach is in line with the ECHA Guidance R.11, chapter R.11.4.1 (ECHA, 2017).

Toxicity
The substance is not classified as H350, H340, H372, H373, H350i, H360 and/or H361. In addition the acute toxicity data are clearly > 0.01 mg/L (lowest EL50 (48 h) 9.1 mg/L (OECD 202)). Moreover, the available data on chronic toxicity in mammals indicates that the substance is chronically not toxic. However, a final conclusion on the P/vP and B/vB properties is not yet possible (see above). Thus, it is not yet clear if a further assessment of the T-properties is necessary. This approach is in line with ECHA Guidance R.10, chapter R.11.4.1.3.4 (ECHA, 2017).
