- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- A study according to OECD guideline 105 was initiated. However, based on the preliminary results, a determination of the water solubility of the test item according to TG OECD 105 is not possible, because its water solubility is too high for the approach given by the guideline. Therefore an expert statement was prepared.

Results and discussion
Water solubility
- Key result
- Water solubility:
- > 1 000 g/L
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Remarks on result:
- completely miscible
- Remarks:
- Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts” (CAS no. 70983-43-6) is miscible with water in a test item weight to water volume ratio of at least 10:1 at room temperature.
- Details on results:
- Preliminary test
The preliminary test indicated a water solubility of >1.000 g/L, as 0.1 g were completely dissolved in 0.1 mL of ultra-pure water.
Main test
Based on the results of the preliminary test, a determination of the water solubility of the test item “Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts according to TG OECD 105 is not possible, because its water solubility is too high for this approach.
Any other information on results incl. tables
The preliminary test according to TG OECD 105 showed that the test item was very soluble in water, as ca. 0.1 g could be readily dissolved in 0.1 ml of ultra-pure water. Based on the testing scheme provided in the guideline and given in the table below, this corresponds to a water solubility of >1000 g/l.
Testing scheme to determine the approximate water solubility in the preliminary test:
mL of water for 0.1 g test item | 0.1 | 0.5 | 1 | 2 | 10 | 100 | >100 |
Approx. solubility in g/L | >1000 | 1000 to 200 | 200 to 100 | 100 to 50 | 50 to 10 | 10 to 1 | <1 |
This result was further confirmed by an additional test, which illustrated that addition of 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 10 ml of ultra-pure water to about 1 g of test item resulted in a clear solution in all cases. This demonstrates that “Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts” (CAS no. 70983-43-6) is miscible with water in a test item weight to water volume ratio of at least 10:1.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- The substance “Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts” (CAS no. 70983-43-6) is miscible with water in a test item weight to water volume ratio of at least 10:1 at room temperature as demonstrated in a preliminary test according to OECD 105.
- Executive summary:
It was the aim of this study to determine the water solubility of the test item “Imidazolium compounds, 2-C4-8-alkyl-1-(2-carboxyethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-(hydroxyethyl), hydroxides, sodium salts“ (CAS no. 70983-43-6) according TG OECD 105.
The preliminary test according to the guideline showed that the test item was very soluble in water, as about 0.1 g could be readily dissolved in 0.1 ml of ultra-pure water corresponding to a water solubility of >1000 g/L.
This result was further confirmed by an additional test, which illustrated that addition of 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 10 mL of ultra-pure water to about 1 g of test item resulted in a clear solution in all cases. This demonstrates that the test item is miscible with water in a test item weight to water volume ratio of at least 10:1.
Based on these results, a determination of the water solubility of the test item according to TG OECD 105 is not possible, because its water solubility is too high for the approach given by the guideline.
