Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
Additional information
Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Brachydanio rerio), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus) for the registration substance. The relevant short-term values are:
Fish: LC50 (96 h): >201 mg/l; NOEC: ≥201 mg/l
Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): >90 mg/l; NOEC: ≥ 90 mg/l
Algae: EC50 (72 h): >161 mg/l; NOEC: ca.110 mg/l
An activated sludge respiration inhibition 3 hour EC50 value of >100 mg/l is read-across from a structurally related substance [tetraethyl orthosilicate (CAS 78-10-4)].
The rapid hydrolysis of both the registration and read-across substances (half-life 4 h at pH 7 and 25°C for the registration substance (CAS 18765 -38 -3), and 4.4 h at pH 7 and 25°C for the read-across substance tetraethyl orthosilicate (78-10-4)) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed to the hydrolysis products in addition to the parent substance.
In view of the rapid hydrolysis of the registered substance to silicic acid and 2-butoxyethanol and the absence of toxicity to aquatic organisms of silicic acid, the PNECs will be based on data for 2-butoxyethanol (CAS 111-76-2). The available data are obtained from the EU RAR (2006).
The relevant short-term data are:
Fish: Freshwater: LC50 (96 h): in the range 983 to 2137 mg/L; Marine: LC50 1125mg/L
Invertebrates: Freshwater: EC50 (72 h): 540 mg/l, EC50 (48 h): 835 mg/L; Marine: 24 h EC50 of 1000 mg/L
Algae: EC50 (72 h): 911 mg/l
Long-term data are also available:
Fish: NOEC: >100 mg/L
Invertebrates: NOEC: 100 mg/L
Algae: NOEC: 286 mg/L
A 20 hour EC5 of 463 mg/L was determined in a growth inhibition test with ciliated protozoa.
Refer to the Ecotoxicological Information for further discussion of the approach to chemical safety assessment.
