Description of key information
Short-term toxicity to fish
The acute toxicity of the read-across source substance HEPES to Zebrafish (Danio rerio) was determined according to OECD 203 (1992) under GLP conditions. The 96h-LC50 was determined to be >100 mg/L (reference 6.1.1-1).
Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Based on the nominal concentrations of the test item, the 48 hours EC10, EC50 and EC100 for Daphnia magna were >100 mg/L following OECD 202. (reference 6.1.3-1).
Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
In an experimental study under GLP conditions according to OECD Test Guideline 201 using the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the 72 h algal growth inhibition EC50 of the source substance was determined as >100 mg/L based on growth rate and yield. These results are also applied to the target substance (reference 6.1.5-1).
Toxicity to microorganisms
The toxic effects of the read-across source substance on the oxygen consumption rate of aerobic micro-organisms (activated sludge) was determined according to the OECD 209 (1984) (reference 6.1.7-1). After 3 hours the EC50 was determined to be >1000 mg/L.
In conclusion, no effects were observed in any of the aquatic tests, therefore, the substance is not considered to be hazardous to the aquatic environment.
