Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

Of the two studies available, the study on 3,5 xylenol returned an equivocal result. Whilst the author of this study concluded that the test substance, 3,5 xylenol did not exhibit any skin sensitising potential, due to similar skin reactions being elicted by the solvent and the test preparation, the outcome of the study could not be concluded with confidence. The study conducted on 2,4 xyelnol returned a positve result, furthermore, no reactivity with the solvent was observed.

Whilst it could be concluded that the skin sensitisation endpoint would need to be repeated to obtain an unequivocal result, data provided for 2,4 xylenol (a structurally similar analogue) confirms that the 2,4 isomer has clear skin sensitising properties. Therefore the approach here provides evidence that the 3,5 isomer may potenitally have skin sensitising properties, and therefore would negate any further in vivo investigation of this endpoint.
