Vetivert Oil is a Natural Complex Substance, a mixture consisting of > 140 poorly soluble constituents. For 24 of the major constituents, divided over 3 different functional groups (alcohols, hydrocarbons and ketones), log Kow values have been estimated using the EPISUITE 3.20 Kowwin (Q)SAR. These 24 constituents make up 70.6% of the total composition of vetivert oil. The functional groups, the number of constituents in each group, the percentage of the functional group in the total composition of vetivert oil and the log Kow range for each group are reported below.
Alcohols (n=10, 47.1%): 4.1 - 5.63
Hydrocarbons (n=9, 11.8%): 5.74 - 6.32
Ketones (n=5, 11.7%): 3.35 - 4.93
Based on these estimations it can be concluded that >25% w/w of vetivert oil has alog Kow >4 (as alcohols are the main component). This leads to a R53 classification under the classification criteria of 67/548/EC and may lead to a classification as chronicically ecotoxic under 1272/2008/EC, dependent on substance ecotoxicity.
The toxicity of the NCS towards algae and Daphnia was experimentally established.
The 48h-LL50 of Vetivert Oil towards Daphnia was found to be 2.6 mg/l (48 LC50 = 0.95 mg/l based on actual measured concentrations). The 48h-EL50 of vetivert oil towards algae is 23 mg/l (48hEC50 = 9.1 mg/l based on actual measured concentrations).
The volume is 1 -10 tons/year, therefore no PNEC is derived and no hazard assessment or PBT assessment is conducted.
Conclusion on classification
Vetivert Oil is a Natural Complex Substance, a mixture consisting of poorly soluble constituents. The toxicity of the NCS towards algae and Daphnia was experimentally established.
The lowest ecotoxicity value is the 48h-LL50 from a Daphnia WAF Study. In this study the 48h-LL50 is 2.6mg/l. This leads to a classification with R51.
As Vetivert oil is not readily biodegradable and the majority (>63.5% (w/w)) of its constituents have an estimated log Kow > 3 and no measured data on BCF is available for vetivert oil, it is also classified as R53. Thus according to Directive 67/548/EEC, vetivert oil is classified R51/53 (Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment).
According to Regulation 1272/2008/EC, Vetivert oil is classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment Chronic Category 2 (H411).
