Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Water solubility of magnesiums under O2 and CO2 exclusion: 6.7 mg/L at 21 °C (pH 10.8)
Transformation/Dissolution screening test in media of pH 6 and 8: > 100 mg/L at 21°C (pH 10.0)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For water solubility testing, dest. water is used while for T/D the test media exists of a defined composition of metal salts (e.g. NaHCO3, KCl, CaCl2, CaSO4) which leads to an increase of dissolved magnesium in solution. The T/D testing is needed for read across argumentation using environmental studies performed with different magnesium salts and could be regarded as valid to fulfill the endpoint "water solubility" under REACH.However, it is known from published data that magnesium is only slightly soluble in water, since forming of magnesium hydroxide at the surface of solid magnesium particles avoids further dissolution; it was decided to perform water solubility testing in accordance to OECD 105 for consistency reasons.
