Additional information
ETBE is a pale yellow liquid with a melting point of - 94 ˚C (SRC Epiwin Experimental database, 2003) and a boiling point of 73.1 ºC (Chatin et al., 1994). The relative density of ETBE is 0.75 at 15 ˚C (Chatin et al., 1994). The vapour pressure of ETBE is 17000 Pa at 25 °C (Harlan Laboratories Ltd, 2009). The water solubility of ETBE is 16400 mg/l at 20 ˚C (Gonzales-Olmos and Iglesias, 2008).The octanol/water partition coefficient (log Pow) is 1.48 (Biodevelopment Laboratories, 1994). The substance is not surface active; the surface tension of 1.21 g/l solution in water is 72.1 mN/m at 21 °C (SafePharm Laboratories, Ltd., 2008). ETBE has a static viscosity of 0.53 mm²/s at 20 °C and 0.47 mm²/s at 40 °C (SafePharm Laboratories, Ltd., 2008).
The substance has a flash point of -19 °C (PTB-Labporatorium 3.43, 2006). Based on this value and a boiling point of 73.1 °C, ETBE should be classified as highly flammable (F, R11) / Flammable Liquid Cat. 2 (H225). The molecular structure of ETBE does not contain groups that indicate potential reactivity with water or pyrophoric properties. The auto-ignition temperature of ETBE is 392 °C at 100.34 -100.92 kPa (SafePharm Laboratories, Ltd., 2008). The substance is not expected to have explosive and oxidising properties.
The substance remains undissociated in water, as it does not contain chemical groups which can undergo dissociation. ETBE is a stable chemical and is not expected to show instability when mixed with typical organic solvents.
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, a study on granulometry is not needed as ETBE is a liquid and used in a non solid or granular form.
