Description of key information
No reliable studies of skin irritation are available for sodium hydrogensulfide.
One study is available on eye irritation which however could only be used as supportive information: the Kramer; Weigand_1974 study supports the classification as eye irritant Cat. 1 (irreversible effects on the eye) since a ca. 30 % NaHS solution was observed to have irreversible effects on the rabbit eye.
Since sodium hydrogensulfide requires classification for skin corrosivity and has a pH value above 11.5 no testing need to be conducted.

Additional information
General
A literature search and evaluation programme on animal and human irritation data of sodium hydrogensulfide has been conducted. All data sources were assessed by expert toxicologists for quality and reliability, as well as relevance for regulatory risk assessment under REACH. The results are attached to the technical dossier in atabular report (IUCLID section 13).
Skin irritation
Studies on dermal irritation/corrosion with sodium hydrogensulfide are neither available nor proposed, based on scientific considerations and for reasons of animal welfare:
(i) In accordance with section 8.1, column 2, Annex VII of regulation (EC) 1907/2006, the in-vitro skin irritation study does not need to be conducted as the available information indicates that the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin.
(ii) In accordance with section 8.1.1, column 2, Annex VIII of regulation (EC) 1907/2006, the in-vivo skin irritation study does not need to be conducted since the substance is proposed for classification as “corrosive to the skin” and furthermore, the substance is a strong base (pH≥11.5).
Eye irritation
No adequate and reliable studies on eye irritation with sodium hydrogensulfide are available and none are proposed, based on scientific considerations and for reasons of animal welfare. In accordance with section 8.1.1, column 2, Annex VIII of regulation (EC) 1907/2006, the in-vitro eye irritation study does not need to be conducted since the available information indicates that the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin. Similarly, in accordance with section 8.1.1, column 2, Annex VIII of regulation (EC) 1907/2006, the in-vivo eye irritation study also does not need to be conducted since the substance requires classification as corrosive to the skin and it is provided that the registrant undertakes to classify the substance as eye irritant. Furthermore, the substance is a strong base (pH≥11.5).
The supportive study by Weigand_1974 resulted in a statement that sodium hydrogensulfide (ca. 30 % solution) has irreversible effects on rabbit eye. This result also indicates serious eye damage.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Justification for classification is based on Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 and on read-across approach from sodium sulfide, which is listed in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, Annex VI, Table 3.2 (Annex I to Directive 67/548/EEC) as "skin corrosive cat. 1b": Sodium hydrogensulfide should be classified based on its caustic alkaline nature with extreme pH (>=11.5) and its similarity to sodium sulfide as skin corrosive cat.1B (causes severe skin burns and eye damage) according to GHS, and as corrosive, R34: "Causes Burns" according to Directive 67/548/EEC.
According to Regulation No 1272/2008 (3.3.2.3) skin corrosive substances shall be considered as leading to serious damage to the eyes as well (Category 1). Sodium hydrogensulfide should therefore be classified as eye irritant Cat.1 (irreversible effects on the eye).
Furthermore, sodium hydrogensulfide has to be classified according to GHS as "corrosive to the respiratory tract". This is valid for substances and mixtures in addition to classification for skin corrosivity, if no acute inhalation test data are available and which are inhaled. This applies for sodium hydrogensulfide.
