Ecotoxicity data from a guideline test with iron cobalt chromite black spinel are available for algae. Exponentially-growing cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to filtrated eluates made from loadings of 1 and 100 mg /L iron cobalt chromite black spinel for 72 hours according to the OECD TG 201. The eluates for the different loadings were prepared individually in accordance with OECD guidance document No. 29 by shaking for 7 days and subsequent filtration. The test evaluation was based on loadings. There were not any loading-dependent inhibiting effects on the algal growth. There was a certain stimulation of cell growth compared to the controls, possibly due to the introduced trace metals, i.e. nutrients. The EL50 values for inhibition of growth rate and yield were estimated to be > 100 mg/L. The NOEL for both growth rate and yield was ≥ 100 mg/L. These data indicate that iron cobalt chromite black spinel may not be toxic to the trophic level of algae/aquatic plants.
