Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The results reported in the Lemna study on Similar substance 01 (Caduff, 2012) confirm the non-toxicity of the dye that is a structural analogue of Direct Black 22 (DBk22).

On the contrary in the study on aquatic algae (Riva, 2000) some adverse effects on growth inhibition were recorded.

The differences in outcomes of the two studies are probable due to the shading effects of coloured water in the algae test; in this case is not clear if the results obtained are true toxic effects of substances or if are effects due to the decrease of light available for the plant.

From this point of view the results recorded in Lemna study are more reliable, considering the structural analogy of the two dyes, DBk22 is expected to be no toxic to aquatic plants.
