Description of key information
Amine synergist hydrolyses rapidly under environmentally relevant conditions. At 25°C, the half-life in a laboratory study was 104 d at pH 4, 11 h at pH 7 and < 1 h at pH 9. The degradation products were tripropylene glycol (TPG) and diethyl amino propionic acid (DEA-AA) (Parent, 2007).
Complete breakdown of the substance and its degradation products by microorganisms is slower. In a manometric respirometry study, amine synergist was not readily biodegradable (30 – 40% degradation in 28 days), however > 80% degradation was reached within 61 days (Beimborn, 1999), indicating that the substance is inherently biodegradable (not fulfilling specific criteria).
Information available on TPG indicates that it is degradable in the environment, albeit not readily biodegradable in all the tests conducted [1].There is no data on the DEA-AA adduct but modelling using EPIWIN based on the smiles notation suggests that the substance is readily biodegradable (see Annex 3). DEA alone is also readily biodegradable in an OECD 301C modified MITI test [2].
