Description of key information
A OPPTS 830.6314 guideline GLP study was performed. The only notable finding was a significant temperature increase (an increase of 5°C or more) was observed when EC 202-228-8 was combined at a ratio of 4:2 with potassium permanganate and with zinc powder. It is highly unlikely that EC 202-228-8 has a high oxidizing potential.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Oxidising properties:
- no
Additional information
EC 202-228-8 was tested in an oxidation/reduction: chemical incompatibility study conducted in accordance with US OPPTS 830.6314. Test sample was added to the chemical reactants: water, an ionised solution of monoammonium phosphate, turpentine oil, potassium permanganate, and zinc metal.Visual observations were made and temperature was recorded at one minute intervals during
the first 5 minutes, and subsequently after approximately 15 minutes, one hour and 24 hours.
Over the 24-hour period no noticeable change in colour or other evidence of chemical incompatibility (hissing, fuming and bubbling, popping, evolution of flame, splattering or another violent reaction) were observed, with the exception that the contents of the test tube containing the Test Article in potassium permanganate turned from orange-purple to brownish.
A significant temperature increase (an increase of 5 degrees C or more) was observed when the Test Article was combined at a ratio of 4:2 with potassium permanganate and zinc powder respectively. No significant temperature increase was observed with water, monoammonium phosphate or turpentine oil.
It is concluded that it is highly unlikely that EC 202-228-8 has a high oxidizing potential.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In an oxidation/reduction: chemical incompatibility study conducted in accordance with US OPPTS 830.6314 no noticeable change in colour or other evidence of chemical incompatibility (hissing, fuming and bubbling, popping, evolution of flame, splattering or another violent reaction) were observed, with the exception that the contents of the test tube containing EC 202-228-8 in potassium permanganate turned from orange-purple to brownish.
A significant temperature increase (an increase of 5 degrees C or more) was observed when the EC 202-228-8 was combined at a ratio of 4:2 with potassium permanganate and zinc powder respectively. No significant temperature increase was observed with water, monoammonium phosphate or turpentine oil.
It is concluded that it is highly unlikely that EC 202-228-8 has a high oxidizing potential and there is not sufficient evidence that would warrant classification as an oxidising solid.
