Additional information

All substances in this category share a similar structure with a molecular weight > 500 g/mol. In addition, the substances have a low potential to adsorb to soil and suspended matter. Based on the high molecular weight and insolubility, the substances in this category will not be able to penetrate biological membranes. This is confirmed by the environmental studies on sediment-dwelling organisms for one substance in this category: CAS 1328-53-6. The environmental toxicity data can be used for read-across to all substances in this category.


The effect of substance CAS 1328-53-6 on the sediment-dwelling organism Lumbriculus variegatus was tested in a sediment-water system for 28 days according to OECD TG 225. The 28-d NOEC was determined to be ≥ 1000 mg/kg sediment dry weight for mortality behaviour, biomass, and reproduction in this limit test (BASF 2010, K1).


The NOEC was equal to or above the tested concentration. Therefore, it is concluded that all substances in the category are not toxic to sediment-dwelling organisms, with a NOEC ≥ 1000 mg/kg sediment dry weight.
