Description of key information

Potassium trifluoroacetate gave negative results in mechanical sensitivity (friction and shock), heat sensitivity (flame).
It was not considered to have explosive properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

One reliable experimental study is available and is selected as key study.

The objective of the study (Defitraces, 2011) was to determine whether or not Potassium trifluoroacetate presents a danger of explosion when subjected to heat (heat sensitivity), shock or friction (mechanical sensitivity), according to the EC A14 method and under GLP conditions.

Mechanical sensitivity (friction)

Six negative assays were recorded: No friction sensitivity was noted with the test item.

Mechanical sensitivity (shock)

Six negative assays were obtained: No shock sensitivity was noted with the test item.

Heat sensitivity (flame test)

Six negative assays were obtained: No heat sensitivity was noted with the test item.

In conclusion, potassium trifluoroacetate was not considered to have explosive properties in the experimental conditions used.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As potassium trifluoroacetate gave negative results in mechanical sensitivity (friction and shock), heat sensitivity (flame) it was not considered to have explosive properties, and no classification is required according to the DSD 67/548/EC and the CLP 1272/2008 regulation criteria.
