First-aid measures
General : Immediate first aid treatment reduces the health effects of this substance. Remove affected person from further exposure. In all cases keep the victim at physical and psychic rest and keep warm. Always seek medical advice promptly.
In case of eye contact, remove any contact lens (if wearing) and flush water for at least 15 minutes. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and wash the area with cold water for at least 15 minutes, then cover the area in emollient cream. In case of inhalation, move the victim to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. In case of ingestion, do not induce vomiting. Give large quantities of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Note to physician : Following exposure to acid/NOx fumes the patient should be kept under medical review for at least 48 hours as delayed pulmonary edema.
Fire-fighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media : Water spray or CO2.
Extinguishing media not to be used : Chemical extinguishers or foams.
Specific hazards : Nitric acid is not combustible, but substance is a strong oxidizer and its heat of reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition. Can react with metals to release flammable hydrogen gas.
May explode on contact with a powerful reducing agent.
Hazardous thermal decomposition and combustion products : Nitrogen oxides
Advice for fire-fighters: Use water sprays to cool fire-exposed containers and to disperse vapours. Avoid disposal of contaminated fire fighting water to the environment
Special protective equipment for fire-fighters : Self-contained breathing apparatus and full acid- resistant protective clothing.
Accidental release measures
Ventilate area of leak or spill. Wear full personal protective equipment. Evacuate unnecessary personnel.
Contain and recover liquid when possible. Neutralize with alkaline material (e.g. soda or sodium carbonate), then absorb with an inert material (e.g. vermiculite, dry sand, earth) and place in a chemical waste container. Do not flush to sewer.
Inform appropriate authority in case of accidental contamination of watercourses or drains.
Handling and storage
Handling : Avoid skin and eye contact and inhalation of vapours. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Provide adequate ventilation. Eyewash facility and safety showers should be provided close to the work place. When diluting, the acid should always be added to water and in small quantities.
Storage : Store in cool, dry, ventilated area with acid resistant floors with good drainage. Keep away from heat, water, ignition source, incompatible materials and direct sunlight.
Protect containers from corrosion and physical damage.
Suitable packaging material: stainless steel, glass.
Unsuitable packaging material: steel, copper, nickel.

Exposure controls / personal protection
This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 18(4). Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each Manufacturing site.
Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from every affected Distributor and Downstream Manufacturer/User of the Registrantś intermediate.
Exposure Limits - Average limit value: 1.0mg/m3. Treshold limit value: 2.5 mg/m3.
Engineering measures : Local exhaust ventilation where appropriate.
Provide safety showers and eye washing facility at any location where skin or eye contact can occur.
Hygienic measures : When handling the product do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash hands after handling and before eating, smoking and using the lavatory and at the end of the working period.
Personal protection :
Respiratory system : Wear suitable breathing apparatus if exposure levels exceed or may exceed the recommended exposure limits e.g.masks equiped with filter type E (EN 14387) and B, self contained breathing apparatus.
Skin and body : Wear chemical resistant, protective suit (EN 14605) and boots.
Hands : Chemical resistant gloves complying with EN 374. Material: butyl rubber, PVC, PTFE.
Eyes : Use chemical safety goggles e.g. EN 166 or full face mask EN 402.
Stability and reactivity
Stable at normal storage conditions. May decompose in the air, light and in contact with organic substances.
Conditions to avoid : Direct heat, high temperature, direct sun light.
Contact with combustible organic materials (e.g. wood, cellulose, cotton) may cause fire. Exothermic reaction with water. Can react violently with strong bases and strong reducing agents.
Conditions to avoid : Direct heat, high temperature.
Materials to avoid : Combustible materials, organic materials, oxidizables substances, alkalies, metallic powders, steel, copper, several other metals and alloys, flammable liquids.
Hazardous decomposition products: NOx
Disposal considerations
Dilute with water. Neutralize carrefully with lime or carbonates.
Dispose of in accordance with relevant local regulations.
