Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- no guideline available
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- - Principle of test: calorimetric investigation on the transition enthalpies and entropies of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs propionates
- Short description of test conditions: A Perkin-Elmer differential scanning calorimeter Mod. DSC-2 was employed to measure the phase transition temperatures and enthalpies, and the heat capacities. For each salt 3 to 11 samples were DSC analyzed in the range from ~ 110 K up to the melt region, using sealed Al containers. A Wayne-Kerr autobalance precision bridge Mod. B 331 Mk II (frequency: 1592 Hz; conductance range: E-10 /E-02 - 2 Ohm - 1 ) in connection with a Gould Brush 500 XY plotter was used to continuously record the conductance of solid samples (in the form of pellets compressed between Ag electrodes) as a function of temperature.

Results and discussion
Flammable solids
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- other: DSC
- Remarks on result:
- other: DSC result: TF = 638 K = 364,85°C, TsstrA= 352 K =78,85°C and TsstrB= 258 K = -15.15°C
- Remarks:
- Tsstr A and B are the solid-solid transitiontemperatures which are considered to result from changes in the crystalline structure, no weight loss was observed at these temperatures.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- not classified based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- In the present publication of Ferloni et al. (1975) the thermal behaviour of alkanoates was investigated using DSC analysis. Potassium propionate showed two solid-solid transitions at -15.15 and 78.85°C. These transitions were not accompanied by any weight loss. The Fusion temperature was 364.85 °C corresponding to the melting point temperature. Potassium Propionate is considered to be thermically stable up to 364.85°C, no generation of fumes were reported at lower temperatures, thus, potassium propionate is not considered readily combustible according to Regualtion (EU) No. 1272/2008 (CLP) and the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
